Telephone technology is almost 130 years old technology. Today with the advancement of telephone technology we can access data base, send telex messages and also make bank payments just by hitting some keys in the key board. But in future it will be possible to attach the telephone lines with the computer and access information through a computer. The advancement of integrated circuit technology and semiconductor devices has made possible to invent such kind of telephone sets which not only provide a good speech quality but also phone numbers can be stored, call waiting, calls can be forwarded and call back option and caller id option is also there in those phone sets and anyone can avail those handsets with a reasonable price. Phones that allow people to use internet, books and movies are already available in market and those uses WAP(Wireless Application Protocol) technology.
One thing that is clear that in future phone will have lot more computing power and will have accessibility to communicate with the world through internet will do more and more thing that pc’s do in this days for us. Mats Lindoff, the chief technology officer at Sony Ericsson, a leading handset-maker, points out that the processing power of mobile phones lags behind that of laptop computers by around five years. Furthermore, studies show that people read around ten megabytes (MB) worth of material a day; hear 400MB a day, and see one MB of information every second. In a decade's time a typical phone will have enough storage capacity to be able to video its user's entire life, says Mr Lindoff. Tom MacTavish, a researcher at Motorola Labs, predicts that such “life recorders” will be used for everything from security to settling accident claims with insurance firms. Researchers and scientists have predicted that in near future or within a decade the cost of storage capacity will fall such that then it will be possible to store every single music that have ever recorded in a single chip. In future there will be no necessity to download music rather the user will send some test message and will get the music that he wants with a very minimum price.
Another trend will come when you will use your mobile handset for double purpose for both fixed line calls and mobile calls. A small BTS will synchronize the operation to do this double task. Then one will be able to use a phone set as a mobile phone outside the house and will use this simultaneously as a cordless set when it will be in the home. Also the technology will get much more cheaper and the user will pay a fixed monthly charge and will do unlimited calls, messaging and data transfer.
No doubt some other things will be incorporated with todays existing system of phone.Because of their unique personal nature some people feel naked without their phones. The other two thing that people carry always with them is wallet and key.
In Japan the phones are already used for purchasing goods. The phones communicate with a special reader with a nearby till. The same nearby tills communicate with the phone for train tickets and office passes. So,it will not be a big dream if we think that in near by future phones will be used as keys. Indeed, the mobile phone may end up acting as a universal controller for other electronic devices of all kinds, suggests Alan Harper of Vodafone, a big mobile operator.
The appearance of mobile phones is changing to add new features to it. Already, the clear trend in phone design is towards ever greater diversity. The debate over whether the phone would emerge as the digital “Swiss Army Knife” and cram in as many features and functions as possible is over, says Bruno Giussani, the author of “Roam”, a great and nice book about the mobile industry and its future. Instead, handset-makers now make different devices optimised for particular tasks such as music, photography or e-mail, and combinations of all the available functions. The next step, suggests Stephen Randall of LocaModa, a wireless-services firm, will be a great decoupling, as the screen, keypad and earpiece start to become separate components, or are replaced by other completely new technologies. Combing of all the technologies means that the screen and keypad will get smaller. Otherwise the set will become bulky and will not be easy to carry everywhere. Also there will be such designs where the keypad ,screen and earpieces will be separate from the main devices and will be used when these are necessary. Like when you need to send a mail you can attached the keyboard and screen and can do your task easily. Already the use of the Bluetooth radio link is already getting popular as it is easy to carry and comfortable to use. Also in the touch screen monitor you do not need an extra keypad rather you can use the screen as a key pad. So,the size is minimized and other available facilities are integrated. Also may be the design of the earpieces will be like a small device attached in your ear skin and you will still be able to hear the outside environmental sounds while talking with others and listening music.
In today’s touch screen you need to press the keys but it may happen in nearby future that you will operate the keyboard by voice or directly by brain.
